Hello Nawaz! Can you explain your job to us?

A Development Manager is involved throughout the entire duration of a real estate project. Relying on technical expertise and input from other departments (such as implementation, sales, land management…), the Development Manager must create a sustainable financial model that maximizes return on investment. This requires balancing market challenges, the inflationary costs in the construction sector, and the often complex process of obtaining permits from authorities. In summary, the Development Manager is the driving force behind development within a company like Novaterra and is responsible for the success of their project.

Tell us about your career progression at Novaterra.

I joined the company in 2018 as a Project Manager. Initially, this role involved overseeing projects during their construction phase. I soon became involved in projects from their design phase. Later, in 2022, I had the opportunity to become a Development Manager—a central role at Novaterra, as it is at the heart of every development undertaken by the company.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Days at Novaterra are busy and dynamic. We’re fortunate to work on some great projects, and between technical and administrative tasks, team meetings, and site visits, our days sometimes feel very short! The Nova team is a great group, and I consider myself lucky to be part of it. Communication is the foundation of our collaboration, and we all work towards Novaterra’s success. Of course, we also enjoy lunch breaks or a coffee during the day to chat and make our workdays more pleasant!

What do you like most (and least!) about your job?

I have a background in civil engineering, and although my role is less technically focused on engineering, it remains the foundation that allows me to successfully lead my projects. Additionally, the diversity of our projects continuously expands my knowledge and exposes me to various fields. As for the less enjoyable aspects, I mentioned earlier the challenges related to obtaining permits. We operate at full speed, and it’s important to stay motivated even when our patience is tested!

What path should one take to pursue this career?

I believe experience in construction is an advantage. However, this role also requires a solid understanding of finance and numbers. It’s important not to underestimate the need for strong communication skills, both with internal and external stakeholders, and being assertive in decision-making is crucial.

Thank you, Nawaz, for giving us a glimpse into your professional world!
