Located in the Creative Park of Beau Plan, the former foundry that now houses the Patrick Mavros boutique tells a beautiful story while echoing the philosophy of this renowned jewellery house. Blending conservation and commitment, it reflects the ideas and values behind the restoration of this historic building.
As a symbol of engaged craftsmanship, Patrick Mavros draws inspiration from Mauritius’ historical and industrial heritage. Its Beau Plan boutique is a striking example of this vision.
A place with stories to tell
It was in 2018 that the boutique, followed by its production workshop, moved into Beau Plan. “The vision of Beau Plan, which embraces the preservation of our historical and natural heritage, immediately resonated with Forbes Mavros,” explains Emeric Vigier de Latour, Senior Manager, Communication & Marketing at Novaterra. It was the former Beau Plan foundry that caught his eye. Though abandoned at the time, the building’s walls still told a rich story. “This was where metal was melted and worked to repair and create new parts for the factory,” he explains.
That’s when a major restoration effort began, led by Mauritian architect Salim Currimjee, Forbes Mavros himself, and the Novaterra team. “It was essential for us to work with what already existed and showcase this unique heritage. Thanks to the renovation works, we were able to preserve nearly the entire building,” Emeric says. And it shows. The boutique’s cut stone and metal beams continue to express the exceptional heritage of Beau Plan, the industrial strength that helped shape the soul of the region over centuries.
The Mavros journey didn’t stop there. A few months later, Forbes Mavros also set up his production workshop on site, introducing an original concept. “The space between the boutique and the workshop is open, allowing visitors to see the artisans at work, which is quite rare in the jewellery world.” Somewhere between past and present, the Patrick Mavros boutique also offers an immersive experience through explanatory panels, inviting visitors to discover the rich history embedded in the stones of the building.
A brand with purpose
Founded in Zimbabwe over 40 years ago, the Patrick Mavros jewellery house now enjoys international acclaim. With stores in London, Nairobi, Cape Town, Harare, Victoria Falls, and Windhoek, the brand also set up shop in Mauritius in 2006. Hippos, rhinos, elephants… A champion of conservation, the brand first pays tribute to the natural heritage it knows best: that of Africa.
In collaboration with organisations such as the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation, the brand combines modernity and tradition to create its one-of-a-kind pieces, using ancient techniques like lost-wax casting alongside more contemporary methods such as 3D printing. Certified Made in Moris, the brand proudly celebrates Mauritian craftsmanship.
